House Museum Dr. João Soares

A construction of the beginning of the last century, inserted in a village that still maintains the characteristics of small urban nucleus.

The change in the type of use of the deeply degraded building from private housing to Casa-Museu / Centro Cultural, advised that structural and volumetric changes of the existing space be made.

Some of the main elements around which the architectural project developed, reference the façade, stairs, reading room/studio located on the 1st floor, the views that open to the garden and the Chapel of Our Lady of Monte, as well as the reuse or replacement in some cases, of preexisting materials in the whole of the property, such as woods, stones, iron (columns) among others.

The Museological Program defined for the Casa Museu suggested the subdivision of the Cultural Center into three functional and autonomous nuclei with each other:

I) The Library and Administrative Services;

II) The House Museum, Cultural Center, Auditorium;

III) Guest Residences (researchers/scientists), and the Garden.

The volumetric/spatial opening of the Building, carried out in an uncompromised way, made it possible to interconnect with the underlying objectives and meanings promoted by the Museum House, and at the level of the architectural project this option was reflected and provided an environment surrounded by transparencies and light, where the “Reading of the History of the Seculo XX” accompanies the visitor in narrative paths interconnected with each other, also driven by the rigor of its geometric risk.

“An open house facing the history of the past, which crosses the present in the free future.”
